~
A Beacon of Lite
Jesmond, a place of undeniable intrigue, is named after the ‘Mounde de Jesus’ a place of pilgrimage in 1172.
You can almost describe it as a Bohemian Phenomenon, with a blend of souls, culture and differing languages.
What we are dealing with here is an extraordinary forcefield, and with Jesmond Library at its centre, it’s enigmatic presence that has captured the attention of many. It is more than a quaint, unassuming city hamlet, a village of community. It has a significant sprinkling of international students that bring, fun, joy and commerce to it. Many go on to become long term residents and raise their families here.
Jesmond, as a community, punches well above its weight.
To get there, you cautiously proceed to passport control...then it is possible to disengage your automobile's engine...allowing it to coast along its intended trajectory. The enigmatic allure of Jesmond will entrap you...you will find yourself inexorably drawn into its welcoming captivating grasp. It has a 'certain goodness'.
You will be privy to a collective of shops, charities and kindness with many languages, encompassing exotic and unfamiliar dialects, and a love of food. The preeminent vocabulary is the colloquial posh Geordie, and the words 'Gannin' and 'Cannin' are often heard on the wind.
The indigenous inhabitants and recent arrivals have united under the banner of Jesmond Community Library fostering inclusivity and collaboration among individuals from diverse ages and backgrounds.
Something rather remarkable is unfolding, albeit it is neither perfect or without its flaws, it is trying, and we are ‘gannin geet canny’. How can we forget that Jesmond is in the illustrious city of Newcastle, just east of St James Park. In Jesmond they ‘tak aboot their beloved Toon’, and get your shopping done, read a book, meet your marra, have a cuppa...and tell your ma ‘you will still be home for tea’.
